Comparing Sports Packages
In today’s world of cord-cutting, the sports available from each provider can be a deciding factor in deciding which option is your best fit. DirecTV and Dish both have sports packages that cover just about all major sports but the few differences that we detail below can make a big difference in your choice.
As we previosly mentioned, both DirecTV and Dish Network cover all of the major US sports such as NFL, college football, college basketball, NBA, MLB, NASCAR, and NHL. Both services also have regional sports coverage available through different providers. They also have the optional packages outside of the major ESPN and Fox sports channels including ESPN Gameplan for college football, NBA League Pass, NHL Center Ice, MLB Extra Innings, and ESPN Full Court for college basketball as well as packages for soccer, tennis, golf and more. These plans will essentially give you just about every game televised within those sports categories for a certain monthly price. The monthly and yearly prices are usually the same at both place.
So by now your probably wondering what the difference between the two competitors is on the sports side of things. The difference is NFL Sunday Ticket. As of right now DirecTV has exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. This option gives you every NFL game on the airwaves each week along with things like the RedZone channel for live look-ins when teams are about to score. The best part about this option is that you can get it on your phone, tablet, or just about any other device. This is essential for those with busy schedules who can’t always be in front of the TV for the big game. This means that as of right now DirecTV slightly edges out Dish in this category, especially if you’re a big NFL fan.
DirecTV Genie vs. Dish Hopper
You might not think about it, but you also need to get the right receiver to really enjoy your TV viewing. Whether you like to record all types of shows or you simply like easy-to-use features you should be able to find them with both options. For the average user there is really not much difference between the Genie by DirecTV and the Hopper by Dish Network. They both have all of your basic DVR features with just a few points that make them different.
The best features for the Hopper are that you can pause your TV or record the shows and watch them from anywhere, including a mobile device if you download the Dish Anywhere App. Other features include the ability to skip through commercials on select channels with the AutoHop and PrimeTime Anywhere options as well as the Hopper gives you 2TB store which is more than the average Genie device.
On the other hand, the Genie does have program suggestions based on your viewing history as well as a smaller and sleeker design. It’s also $10 per month which is cheaper than the Hopper which is currently $12 per month. In this category you have to give the slight win to Dish’s Hopper, but it’s so slight that it really shouldn’t affect your decision either way.
Satellite TV Shopping Tips
Sometimes getting the best deal comes down to just following a few tips and making sure you look through the available packages to find the right plan for your unique situation. We provided a few tips below and plan to update this section regularly as the market changes or we pick up on new tips to help you save money. Aside from these tips you can also search for both DirecTV deals and Dish Network deals within our coupon section.
- Always Call For Best Pricing – You can always just shop online and find the advertised rates but many times if you give the company a call they will find you a better than advertised price. You can call DirecTV at 1-877-912-2702 and Dish Network at 1-888-656-2461. This is always the quickest way to find a discount even though it doesn’t always work. Calling is usually easier than the internet to set up your service anyways.
- Be Aware of Introductory Pricing – Unlike many cable providers, satellite providers usually have introductory pricing that is much lower than what the price goes to after this period. For instance, the price for the first 12 months may be $39 per month but in the fine print it changes to $75 after your first year of service. Since most of the satellite providers make you sign up for a two year agreement this means that you will be stuck paying this high price for the service. Always check the introductory pricing and the regular monthly price before deciding on the package.
- Check For Internet Bundles – If you get satellite TV then you will need to get your internet from another provider unless you choose to get satellite internet. Most of the time DirecTV and Dish work with local internet providers. This means that you should always check for any available deals to bundle internet with your plans using a local provider. These deals aren’t available in all areas as many times they work with regional internet providers.
Should You Choose DirecTV or Dish Network?
We laid out all of the information we could think of in this guide to help you make the choice between Dish and DirecTV. While there may be certain aspects that are better about one or the other, it all comes down to your personal preference. This means that with the hundreds of different combinations available you should be able to get the exact package you want and compare the prices between the two easily whether online or by giving them a call. The pricing for both line up to be pretty much the same so as of right now you can’t go with one provider over the other because they’re cheaper. So essentially it comes down to whether you’re looking for certain available packages for sports or you can get a lower price for the exact custom package you chose. Either way it’s hard to go wrong with either of these popular satellite TV providers.
